Hindi Language

Hindi is a very young language, it freely borrows words from other languages and for obvious reasons borrows most from English. Hindi is a mix of Pharasi and Sanskrit based Indian languages. In a sense we can say that in that mix when the Pharasi content is heavy it becomes Urdu and when the Sanskrit content is heavy it becomes Hindi. People like me born much after Indian Independence have a very little of Pharasi or Urdu in their Hindi but we have a lot of English words in our day to day spoken Hindi.

I feel most uncomfortable when I have to use an English word in Hindi or when I hear someone do that but I have to accept that most Hindi speakers are very comfortable with that and have a good working vocabulary of English words. You can use this to your advantage.

When you are learning to speak Hindi, the best thing is to start speaking Hindi as soon as possible. If you want to speak pure Hindi you might have to wait months before you can speak your first Hindi sentence. This will slow your progress greatly. The best thing is to start speaking Hindi even with 90% English in it. This way you will make a fast progress - a language can only be learnt by speaking and listening to it.

When is the Hindi-English mix Hindi?

What is the minimum Hindi content you should have in your Hindi-English mix to qualify it as Hindi? My guess is that as long as you keep pronouns, case indicators, and verbs in Hindi you can use as much English as you fancy and still claim it to be Hindi.

Use nouns, adjectives, adverbs in English but be careful to have pronouns, case indicators and verbs in Hindi. Keeping this in mind, I have taken great care to prepare comprehensive notes on the use of pronouns, tenses, and the use of verbs in a Hindi Sentence Factory. If you cannot live without your vocabulary dose, start with memorising the verbs and then move on to prepositions, conjuncts, & adjectives. You are welcome to some frequently used nouns too. All these lists are linked through the Learn Hindi page. But don't let a limited vocabulary set prevent you from speaking Hindi. Start speaking Hindi now.

Below are given Hindi translations of a few English sentences. The translations qualify as Hindi but you can clearly see that they still contain a lot of English words. The idea of giving these sentences here is to get the structure of Hindi sentences fixed in your mind and also to give you confidence in speaking Hindi with a liberal Hindi-English mix.

    David Copperfield

So true are these avowals at the present day, that I can now only take the reader into one confidence more. Of all my books, I like this the best. It will be easily believed that I am a fond parent to every child of my fancy, and that no one can ever love that family as dearly as I love them. But, like many fond parents, I have in my heart of hearts a favourite child. And his name is DAVID COPPERFIELD.

Whether I shall turn out to be the hero of my own life, or whether that station will be held by anybody else, these pages must show. To begin my life with the beginning of my life, I record that I was born (as I have been informed and believe) on a Friday, at twelve o'clock at night. It was remarked that the clock began to strike, and I began to cry, simultaneously.

In consideration of the day and hour of my birth, it was declared by the nurse, and by some sage women in the neighbourhood who had taken a lively interest in me several months before there was any possibility of our becoming personally acquainted, first, that I was destined to be unlucky in life; and secondly, that I was privileged to see ghosts and spirits; both these gifts inevitably attaching, as they believed, to all unlucky infants of either gender, born towards the small hours on a Friday night.
